Nourish Restaurants celebrate 1000th ‘pay it forward’ meal claimed with new charity loyalty card
Last week, Nourish Restaurants launched a brand new reward scheme. The ‘Pay it Forward Loyalty Card’ isn’t your average reward system. As stamps are collected, the paying customer benefits, and so do the underprivileged populations of Sheffield and Leeds.
The ‘Pay it Forward’ concept is simple. Nourish customers can opt to pay for an extra meal or hot drink alongside their order, buying a meal for themselves, as well as somebody else that may not be able to afford one themselves. This extra order is then placed onto the Pay it Forward Tree. Each Nourish restaurant has a Tree, and the free drinks and meals available at each Nourish are placed onto them, for somebody less privileged to collect. The purchase of one extra meal or drink enables the gifting of a warming, nutritious meal in the comfort of Nourish’s relaxed and welcoming restaurants.
So far, Nourish’s Sheffield restaurant has given away 460 free meals, with Leeds slightly ahead with 545. The Pay it Forward Loyalty card commemorates the achievement of the 1000th free meal milestone.
Many of Nourish’s customers have paid for additional food and drink, and this has greatly benefitted Leeds and Sheffield’s homeless population – providing fresh, wholesome food and drink to those in need. The Pay it Forward Loyalty Card aims to accelerate the growth of Nourish’s pay it forward scheme, with the acquisition of stamps resulting in items added to the Pay it Forward Trees.  The system works as follows:
 ·       Spend over £5 five times - place a free hot drink on the Pay it Forward Tree
 ·       Spend over £5 ten times - the customer receives a 50% discount on their next meal, and will be able to place a free meal on the Pay it Forward Tree
The Pay it Forward Loyalty Card rewards regular customers, and generates free food and drink for Leeds and Sheffield’s less privileged populations. Nourish Founder and nutritionist, David Stache, commented:
“Since we opened our first store in Sheffield, we’ve taken part in the ‘pay it forward’ concept. We saw a fantastically positive response from our customers, and passed the 100th meal only a few weeks after the launch of the Pay it Forward Tree. We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of our customers. The new loyalty card scheme helps our customers further support and connect with the vulnerable and homeless, helping them to get a good meal. We are proud to have such a generous and understanding customer base who support our ethos for helping those in need.”
The Pay it Forward Loyalty Card is available in the Leeds and Sheffield Nourish Restaurants now.

Pay it Forward is not just about doing more things.

We all lead busy lives, working, driving our kids to school, shopping.

It’s easy to think that to “Pay it Forward” we need to add more things to our lives, like opening a door for someone, letting someone cut in front of us while driving, letting someone in front of us when they have only a few items at the checkout.

But Pay it Forward has two notions built in to it that are pretty unique.

Firstly Pay it Forward is not just an act of kindness. Pay it Forward recognises that the person who benefits from the act of kindness is quite capable to pay that kind act forward to someone else. It recognises that the homeless person we gave food to is able to give something of value to another person as a pay it forward. In fact it’s clear from most research that the poor are often more generous with what they have than the rich are.

Secondly it’s not just about doing more things. Letting someone out in front of us when driving is an act of doing less, not more. It’s not an act at all, it is just not pushing on because we have the right of way. Waiting and holding open that door for someone several paces behind you is another act of not acting. You wait, doing nothing, rather than push on into your life.

Not doing is something that people who meditate or practice mindfulness understand very well. The more ‘still’ you are the more you see the opportunities to benefit another. That’s because your mind is usually working hard to get you through that to-do list you have and sees everything going on around only as potential obstacles.

So Pay it Forward can help bring happiness to all of us from two directions. It’s fine of course to add good deeds to your to do list. We all benefit. And for those who are concentrating on increasing their own happiness through mindful behaviour, they too as a result.

Thank you for Paying it Forward.

Catharine talks about the inspiration for her book ...

Complete strangers helped her out big time many years ago. Not only that but she didn't have a chance even to say 'thank you'.

So what happened next?

Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his 1841 essay Compensation,[2] wrote: "In the order of nature we cannot render benefits to those from whom we receive them, or only seldom. But the benefit we receive must be rendered again, line for line, deed for deed, cent for cent, to somebody."

Benjamin Franklin asks his friend to "pay it forward"

The concept was rediscovered and described by Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to Benjamin Webb dated April 25, 1784:
I do not pretend to give such a deed; I only lend it to you. When you [...] meet with another honest Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by lending this Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like operation, when he shall be able, and shall meet with another opportunity. I hope it may thus go thro' many hands, before it meets with a Knave that will stop its Progress. This is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money.
